What I’ve Learned Working at a Creative Agency
Working a creative agency has taught me a lot of things. Here's the top lessons I learnt
Are You Stuck In Creative Purgatory?
Are you currently in a space that is detrimental to your creativity?
Imposter Syndrome: Throw it in the bin ASAP
Recognise your worth after all your hard work.
How to Charge More as a Creative
Struggling to charge more as a Creative? Here's four ways to increase your income.
The Hardest Part: Starting
Overcoming the fear of starting: The first of many great steps.
Imposter Syndrome: Throw it in the bin ASAP
Recognise your worth after all your hard work.
Imposter Syndrome can apply to anyone that is having trouble or who isn't able to internalise and own their success.
Side note: This happens to those that you admire too.
Imposter Syndrome is something that no matter what level you reach in your career, it will whisper things to you that is really a bunch of rubbish. The saying really is true that says we really are our worst critics.
Answer me this, you've put in a lot of hard work and managed to get to where you only imagined you could be, so why are you devaluing your self-worth? Only an actual imposter can really feel the full wrath of this I believe.
Imposter Syndrome creates only stress and here or some barriers that it can create:
- It stops you from even starting what you always wanted to explore
- It makes you undermine yourself to take on a position or the ability to handle a task
- You end up lowering your value due to it. How can you expect to be trusted when you don't believe in yourself?
- You feel like the opportunity that you EARNED, was not based on your skill, expertise, or value
I can't say I don't know this feeling because I truly do. It would be unfair to state all these traits that make it what it is without actually helping you understand this:
Of all the people that were considered for the opportunity, they chose you!
You were picked for a reason, and that is due to you having value. word of advice that I love is if someone reaches out to you for your services, or you get through to the next stage of a hiring process, it’s because they believe you are qualified.
And even if you weren't successful on that occasion, it does not necessarily mean you were not fit for the job. You're still capable of creating great work and results. Just to add to that, comparing yourself is the last thing you want to do because at that moment you're only going to be comparing yourself to that person who 'made it’. Use this as your fuel, your drive to better yourself to become better and become more.
A Few Words of Advice:
Embrace the creative stage you're at
This creative journey is all about learning and creating, the work may not be at the standard you want it to be at, so by continuously staying in the pocket of learning, up-skilling on what you already know, and practice. You are going to feel more comfortable being in the creative industry.
Talk about it
You would be in shock by the number of Creatives that have suffered from imposter syndrome. Some would even say it comes with growth. So understanding that this is something that is more common than you think, will help you realise you are not alone in this.
Accept you are not perfect
Those brilliant Creatives you follow on Instagram are not perfect. Perfection isn't real!
You are a human being, you have your strengths, you have your weaknesses. Just as the rest of us also do. As long as you make the effort to improve, sharpen up and address your weaknesses, you don't need to worry as much as you have been doing.
This is a long game, and it's about getting better with time - so by starting now, and not letting the negative thoughts get wrapped up in your value, then I honestly believe that you can go beyond becoming the person you only dared of becoming.
